Breeding season 2007

I started breeding early this year because there weren’t any C.O.M world championships this year. For a lot of breeders this is an important source of income and the place to be if you’re looking for new quality birds to use in the next breeding.

That’s a pity. Hopefully the championship will continue in Hasselt this year.

So I started early this year and disinfected everything with cold ice and sprayed with Océpou.

I started again with 44 breeding sties, of which 22 sties contained couples (male and puppet together) and 22 breeding sties with one male on two puppets. When I’ve got real good males I always use two puppets.

The breeding went well with few loss at the young lizards. Every year it happens to me that some male birds peck the heads of the young birds till a few days later death follows. Be aware of this and select at it. I use to remove these male birds from my breed.

So the breeding went well till at the end of the season my birds suffered from blood louse. I’ve lost about 20 young lizards who were only 20 days old.

I used Océpou again, but that didn’t help, so the blood louse is immune to it.

Later on a lot of breeders told me almost everybody suffered from blood louse, probably because of the gentle winter last year. In July just like every other year I’ve vaccinated the birds.

At the moment I’ve got about 230 young Lizard canaries outside shedding. In September I select the birds for the bird show and it looks like there are some real beauties among them.
